For my documentary review, I watched Fyre: the greatest party that never happened. I really enjoyed the documentary and it has been popping up all over my social media and I thought that now is the perfect opportunity to watch it. It was just released on Netflix and it is about a music festival that went terribly wrong. It was created by a young entrepreneur named Billy McFarland and R&B artist Ja Rule. It started with an app that was used for booking influencers and artists for club appearances, which then somehow snowballed into a music festival. Billy McFarland is now being charged with fraud after planning a music festival in the Bahamas for April 2017. The music festival was expensive for the concert-goers and was canceled soon after everyone arrived because there was so much false advertisement involved. Many of the artists pulled out last minute, the caterers pulled out as well, and there was no clean drinking water, also the beach “villas” were not properly up to standards.

The way that this documentary was filmed was really cool. It was original footage from the people planning the festival that at the time was not going to be used for this documentary. It was cool to see how everyone involved acted when they were planning it and that helped the viewers see why the festival was executed so poorly. The filming jumped and traveled from the Bahamas, New York, and Los Angeles, interviewing creative directors of the festival, investors and basically everyone involved with the festival. Since there was a lot of original footage it worked perfectly for the B-roll, which was used for its original purpose in this sense and made the interview portions a lot more interesting.

The interviews were very, very interesting, they did not use the rule of thirds in this film the interviews were head on but I think they looked a lot better for this film, it gave it a more distinctive look. Though the interviews were head-on, there was a lot of depth in the background and the lighting helped with that. You could also hear the interviewer ask the various interviewee’s the questions at some points in the film which made it a bit more interesting, they were also not censored at all making it more intriguing for the viewers, and a bit more comical.

I think what also made this documentary so interesting were the people involved because there were so many famous faces who were incorporated with this music festival, though they were not in the film it really heightened the excitement of the festival, though it went completely awry.

Watching this documentary really opened my mind into trying things that aren’t exactly “playing by the books” (such as using the rule of thirds). This also really got me excited about filming more things during our class time and working out of class as well. I would recommend this movie to many people!! It's actually a reall good idea but obviously it just totally went wrong!
